Maokai combo routes
Every sequence states what it solves. Learn the decision before the muscle memory.
W → reposition → Q
Direct the push
W roots on arrival. Check which side of the target you occupy before Q so its knockback does not push the enemy away from allied damage.
R → confirm root → W
Wave follow-up
R advances slowly and must connect. Follow a confirmed root with W when allies can reach; the cast alone is not a secured engage.
E into brush → hold Q
Scout before entry
Saplings are more effective in brush. Use their information to choose the approach; keep Q for close threats rather than assuming a thrown sapling makes entry safe.
Ability reference
Maokai knocks back nearby enemies with a shockwave, dealing magic damage and slowing them.
Maokai contorts into a mass of moving roots, becoming untargetable and dashing to the target. Upon arrival, he roots the target.
Maokai flings a sapling to the target area to stand guard. More effective in brush.
Maokai summons a colossal wall of brambles and thorns that slowly advances forwards, damaging and rooting any enemies in the path.
