Aatrox into ranged top: three spacing rules
The matchup is lost in the first three waves or not at all. Three rules that keep the lane survivable until your first sustain spike.
Ranged tops win by hitting you for free while you path toward the wave. Approach along the wall side so the minion block costs them the trade window, and accept the slower wave state that comes with it.
Holding the third cast keeps them at respectful distance. Throwing it at max range from a standing start just gives them a free reset. Cast it only after E has already closed the gap.
Take the sustain component before the damage component. You are not killing a ranged top in lane; you are surviving to the point where your team can use you in a grouped fight.
